Wissa left the club’s pre-season training camp in Portugal last Tuesday, amid speculation around his future.

The 28-year-old striker, who scored 19 Premier League goals last season, is wanted by Newcastle and Brentford have rejected a £25million bid from the Magpies.

Wissa is understood to be furious with Brentford, as he believes he was given assurances he could leave the club this summer.

He returned to London last week for talks with Brentford director of football Phil Giles about his future.

In those talks, it has been reported by the BBC, Wissa threatened not to play for Brentford again if he is not allowed to move to Newcastle

Speaking on Saturday after Brentford's 1-1 draw with Gil Vicente, Bees head coach Keith Andrews said he expected Wissa to return to training this week.

“He has gone back to London,” he said. “It was his decision, obviously because of speculation.

“There are clubs interested, and he felt it was the right thing to go back to London.

“It's simple, really. He folds back into the group next week when we come back to training."

Wissa, who turns 29 in September, is keen to play Champions League football and believes he will not get another chance to fulfil his ambition.

Brentford's all-time Premier League goalscorer has one year remaining on his contract, with the club holding the option to extend it by another year.

The Bees have already lost long-serving head coach Thomas Frank, captain Christian Norgaard and last season's top scorer Bryan Mbeumo.

Brentford are adamant they do not want to lose both Mbeumo and Wissa this summer and have placed a £50m valuation on Wissa to ward off interest in the striker.

Brentford fly back to London on Tuesday before preparing for Saturday's friendly against QPR.

The club expect Wissa to train with the rest of the squad and are preparing for him to be part of the team for the start of the new Premier League season.
