West Ham United secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers last night, with Jarrod Bowen delivering an inspired performance that proved decisive.
After a dour first half, things kicked off after the break when Bowen hung a gorgeous set piece that Tomas Soucek hooked beyond Sam Johnstone in the Wolves goal.
Wolves responded quickly through Matt Doherty, but parity did not last long as Bowen curled a brilliant effort into the bottom corner to restore West Ham’s lead.
The Hammers’ captain revealed a simple yet effective tactical tweak that transformed the game. After the match, Bowen credited a half-time tactical adjustment for the team’s first goal.
He said (via the BBC): “Don’t let up on this opportunity and drop points at home – that was the main message at half-time.
“We had a lot in the first half. We just made a little tweak at half-time, that I was going to take the first corner on that side.
“Like magic, when you make the first one, and you score off it. But we just spoke about it at half-time, and we had a few chances in the first half from them.
“We knew we were a threat from them. It was just putting them away.”
The victory provides a much-needed boost for West Ham, who have struggled for consistency this season.]
This match was crucial for manager Julen Lopetegui, who may have been sacked if he had lost this game.
The Hammers remain 14th in the Premier League, but the Spaniard will believe he has bought himself time to turn things around with this win.
Despite the hard-fought victory, questions remain about Lopetegui’s future as West Ham manager and rightly so.
The club’s outlay on new signings has yet to yield consistent results, and their current position is a cause for concern.
While the win over Wolves offers hope, the Hammers will continue their search for a successor.
The West Ham hierarchy will undoubtedly assess the team’s performance closely in the coming weeks, starting with a trip to high-flying Bournemouth next week.
