Real Betis striker Borja Iglesias has announced he will not play for the Spanish national team “until things change and this type of act does not go unpunished” after Spanish FA President Luis Rubiales refused to resign from his post on Friday.
It was widely expected that Rubiales would step down after a week of great controversy regarding his behaviour and actions at last Sunday’s Women’s World Cup final but he instead rounded on his many critics.
Iglesias, who earned the first of his two caps in 2022, took to X to express his dismay at Rubiales’ press conference speech, saying: “As a footballer and as a person I don’t feel represented by what happened today in the Ciudad del Fútbol de Las Rozas. I find it unfortunate that they continue to press and focus on a colleague.”
He then added that, while, “wearing the Spanish National Team shirt is one of the greatest things that has happened to me in my career” he would not be available for selection for the time being.
