Bolton's losses over the last year have had a big eight-figure boost
Bolton Wanderers have had a huge boost to their finances, as money provided by their existing backers has hit their accounts.
Journalist Alan Nixon has reported that the money amounts to £18 million, which is an incredible windfall for a side that published losses in League One over the last year.
The club's owners, Football Ventures Ltd, who saved the club from liquidation back in 2019, have been backed by Geneva-based oil traders since their purchase, but this marks a huge addition to the club.
The money will help the Trotters cover last year's losses, whilst also putting them in good standing to possibly make a splash in the remainder of this summer's transfer window.
According to Alan Nixon, Bolton have had their pockets boosted due to financial backing from their existing partners, to the tune of £18 million.
It's been revealed that the surge in financial activity took place at the end of last month, but it has only just emerged on the accounts today, with insiders revealing that the cash for A shares and C shares came from those already involved at the club.
Last year, group losses at the club were reported at £11.2 million, nearly double that of the £5.46 million reported in 2023.
Last year though, the Swiss investment in the club increased from 25% to 35%, with those from an entity called BMLL Limited taking more shares in the side. The consortium is led by Ben Luckock, the brother of Nick - who was one of the leaders of Bolton's rescue in 2019.
Additionally, this past year's accounts revealed that 420,843 'A' shares were bought by owner Sharon Brittain, and 140,281 of the same shares were issued to Michael James.
This cash windfall is said to cover the losses of last year and keep some extra money in the bank - and it could potentially help Steven Schumacher in the final weeks of the transfer window.
Bolton have eradicated their losses from last year, whilst also having some money left over to be invested elsewhere, which can only be a positive for the Trotters.
Despite a good performance, they fell on opening day at Stockport County, and then a 2-0 home win over Plymouth Argyle kick-started their season, one which many have high hopes for Steven Schumacher's side.
The Trotters have already parted with fees to bring in the likes of Ethan Erhahon, Thierry Gale and Xavi Simons to the club, and you feel that, with this windfall, there could be some extra funds freed up to further bolster the squad.
If they can do that, then Schumacher's side may be well poised to make a run into the top six once more this season.
