Manchester United will have to search deeper to find a solution for Jadon Sancho, as Borussia Dortmund cannot afford to sign him again.
In the summer of 2021, the Red Devils spent £73 million to buy the winger from the German club. However, this turned out to be one of the club’s worst signings in recent memory, as the Englishman failed to replicate the inspiring displays he produced during his time at Signal Iduna Park.
Hence, Man Utd’s minority owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, branded Sancho as an ‘overpaid’ and ‘probably not good enough’ signing, alongside four fellow United strugglers (Antony, Casemiro, Hojlund and Onana).

Sancho spent two and a half miserable campaigns at Carrington, marred by on and off the pitch issues, including a public spat with Erik ten Hag that left him on the sidelines for several months, before sealing a return to Dortmund in January 2024.
The London native managed to recapture his form during his brief loan spell in Germany, prompting Chelsea to sign him last summer. Nevertheless, a lukewarm campaign at Stamford Bridge saw the Blues pay a £5 million penalty to avoid buying the player on a permanent transfer.
Therefore, Sancho is once again a Man Utd player, but Ruben Amorim has no plans to keep him, especially after signing Matheus Cunha and closing in on a deal for Bryan Mbeumo.
But while several reports have been discussing a potential third spell at Dortmund, Christian Falk doesn’t see such a scenario ensuing this summer.
In his latest column for The Daily Briefing, the reputable German journalist admits that a Sancho return might be intriguing for BVB, but they don’t intend to break the bank to cover his astronomical wages.
“A transfer for Sancho is currently not planned. Jadon is not an issue for sporting director Sebastian Kehl,” explains Falk.
“The problem: Sancho is far too expensive, earning between €18m-20m per year at Manchester United. That would exceed BVB’s salary cap.”
In recent days, there has been talk about interest in the winger from Aston Villa and other Premier League clubs, so it remains to be seen where the 25-year-old will play his football next season.
