Real Madrid could make a surprise move for Liverpool target Florian Wirtz and hijack the deal for the player.
The Reds were tipped to sign the Bayer Leverkusen star this summer, but a deal is yet to be finalised.
According to Spanish publication AS, Madrid still think they have a chance of signing the 22-year-old.
They plan to use new manager Xabi Alonso to convince the young attacker to join them.
Wirtz reportedly rejected an offer from Bayern Munich, while Manchester City withdrew from the transfer race due to the finances involved.
Liverpool are in advanced discussions with Leverkusen for the attacking midfielder. But Madrid could launch a surprise move, which could complicate things for the Reds.
Wirtz has emerged as one of Europe’s brightest young players in recent years. He played a significant role in helping Leverkusen claim a domestic double in 2023/24.
The 22-year-old bagged 16 goals and 15 assists in 45 appearances in all competitions this season.
Wirtz would be an excellent addition for Liverpool, but they have yet to reach an agreement with Leverkusen.
The Bundesliga outfit want £126 million for their prized asset. Liverpool, whose most expensive buy remains the £84m spent on Darwin Nunez, are trying to lower that figure.
