Birmingham City take on Peterborough United in the Vertu Trophy Final on Sunday, with VAR not in use for the game.
The Vertu Trophy Final between Birmingham City and Peterborough United on Sunday will not have VAR despite it being played at Wembley.
It has been a memorable campaign for Chris Davies’ side, with Blues sealing promotion back to the Championship during the week, thanks to a victory which actually came against the Posh. The title is almost impossible to lose.
Now, they have a chance to get more silverware, with Birmingham firm favourites to beat Peterborough at the national stadium this weekend.
Even though the fixture is at Wembley, it has been confirmed that VAR will not be in operation.
Of course, all regular EFL games are played without video assistance, and it’s a decision that is generally supported by those supporters who go to stadiums.
There are various reasons for not using VAR, including the cost of implementing the system, and grounds for not having the capacity for all that’s required.
But that’s obviously not the case at Wembley, and VAR is in place for the play-off finals of each division.
Nevertheless, that won’t happen on Sunday, although there will be goalline technology, which isn’t in place during the season.
With VAR not in use in the competition, it’s arguably right that they don’t use it in the final, and it promises to be an exciting day out for both clubs.
From Peterborough’s perspective, they have eased any relegation fears with an upturn in form over the past few months, and they know that Birmingham are expected to win this game.
They have a good history in this competition, and the competitive game they gave Birmingham in the week means they won’t be fearing the League One leaders.
As for Blues, they will be backed by over 40,000 fans, so even though they have big ambitions for the future, winning this would be a memorable part of what they hope will be a successful journey.
Even with the money they have spent, we know it doesn’t guarantee success at any level, so Davies and the players deserve huge credit.
They may have secured promotion, but winning the league, breaking the points record and picking up a trophy on Sunday means there is a lot to play for over the final month of the season.
