Early indications are that Inter Milan defender Benjamin Pavard has suffered trauma to his left knee in this evening’s Serie A clash against Atalanta.
This according to Italian news outlet FCInterNews, who report on the initial diganosis. There will be further tests on the Frenchman’s condition in the coming days.
Defender Pavard had to come off as a substitute during the first half of this evening’s Serie A match against Atalanta.
The former Bayern Munich man had started the match in Bergamo.
He began on the right of Inter’s back three, his customary position.
However, just after the half hour mark, Pavard was defending an aerial cross from Atalanta’s right, in the centre of the Inter penalty area.
There were a couple of Atalanta players rushing into the area to try and attack the cross.
At that point, there appeared to be a collision between Pavard and La Dea forward Ademola Lookman.
As soon as Pavard fell to the ground following the collision, the Frenchman cleared to be in some amount of distress.
The Inter defender held his knee and cried out in pain.
Moreover, Pavard’s teammates clearly showed significant worry for the 27-year-old.
Certainly, the prospect of a major knee injury for Pavard would not be a positive one for either the player or for Inter, form whom the 2018 World Cup winner is a key man in defense.
It was not quite clear whether the problem was a collision, or whether Pavard had twisted or ruptured a ligament in his knee while he landed.
In any event, no risks were taken with Pavard’s fitness.
The 27-year-old came off as a substitute. It was versatile defender Matteo Darmian who replaced him.
However, there were some potentially positive signs from Pavard.
For one, the defender did appear to have a relatively normal range of motion in his knee. Or at least this was the case once his pain lessened.
Moreover, Pavard, in a knee brace, was able to run on to the pitch to celebrate Hakan Calhanoglu’s opening goal from the penalty spot with his teammates.
