Bayern Munich have identified Renato Veiga as a key target should Minjae Kim leave the club this summer, according to FCBInside and the BILD Podcast “Bayern Insider.” The Portuguese defender, currently contracted to Chelsea, has been on Bayern’s radar for several weeks as they assess potential changes to their back line.
At this stage, Bayern’s pursuit of Veiga hinges entirely on developments regarding Kim, who remains an active candidate for departure but, as of yet, has not attracted concrete offers. Club sources indicate that only if Kim is sold will Bayern move decisively for a new central defender, with Veiga listed as their preferred solution for the left-sided centre-back role.
Veiga’s appeal lies in his versatility and profile. The 21-year-old is comfortable at left centre-back and can also feature at left-back—traits that give him added value for Vincent Kompany as he seeks to refine his defensive setup. He spent the latter half of last season on loan at Juventus, making a solid impression during his stint in Serie A, and was recently called into action for Portugal in the Nations League.
Discussions with Veiga are believed to be at a preliminary stage. Reports suggest that Bayern’s interest dates back to January, when sporting director Max Eberl first reached out to the Chelsea player. Importantly, Veiga is open to a move and Bayern already view him as a strong fit for their requirements.
Financially, a deal would likely require an investment of around €35 million—an amount considered manageable within Bayern’s transfer framework, provided player sales generate the necessary funds. However, there have been no formal negotiations with Chelsea yet, as Bayern are waiting for clarification in the Kim situation before advancing talks.
Club officials are conscious that any further transfers depend on outgoing movement, emphasizing the requirement for financial balance. Internally, Veiga is seen as a player with significant upside who could integrate smoothly into Kompany’s system, particularly as the squad continues to adjust following recent results and injury setbacks.
Bayern’s defensive structure remains a primary area of focus during what has been a challenging summer transfer window, with Veiga considered a logical addition should the dominoes begin to fall in their favor.
