Bayern Munich: Takeaways from 3-0 victory over Mainz

On matchday 31 of the ongoing 2024/25 Bundesliga season, Bayern Munich hosted a competitive Mainz side at the Allianz Arena. Both teams would have been highly incentivized to get a positive result. With an eight-point lead at the top of the table, Bayern want to bring the Bundesliga title back to Munich in advance of the season’s final game on matchday 34. Meanwhile, the visitors, having been one of only two teams to have defeated Die Roten this season, entered Saturday’s encounter in sixth place with hopes of securing a spot in one of next season's European competitions.

Following an early scare, when Mainz’s center-forward-Jonathan Burkardt fired over bar from inside the box, Bayern then went on to dominate the opposition and should have won by a wider margin. Let’s now take a look at some interesting takeaways from Saturday’s 3-0 victory.

Serious concern over Kim Min-jae’s form

Within the last month or so, Kim Min-jae’s form has increasingly become a cause for concern. Kim's sympathizers can rightfully point to the fact that, to date, the South Korean defender has played through either knee or Achilles tendon soreness for most of the season.

However, in the month of April, with Bayern short of options at the back, Kim’s, performances have trended in the wrong direction. Against both Dortmund and Inter Milan his poor aerial-defending against deliveries into the box resulted in headed goals for the opposition.

On Saturday, against Mainz, Kim’s poor form was once again evident in as early as the sixth minute when he was beaten to a long ball by the aforementioned Jonathan Burkardt who, fortunately for Bayern, couldn’t keep his shot down from close range. For the second half, the 28-year-old center-back was replaced by another struggling player in the shape of Sacha Boey. As things currently stand Kim’s time in Munich may be nearing an end.
