In a transfer twist few expected to escalate this quickly, Bayern Munich now appear supremely confident they will land Luis Diaz from Liverpool. This development, first reported by Christian Falk for Caught Offside, hints at serious momentum from the German champions, despite their recent failure to secure Florian Wirtz.
“Bayern are really, really sure they’ll sign Luis Diaz, but they were also really, really sure they’d get Florian Wirtz,” Falk told Caught Offside. It is a bold claim that leaves plenty of room for doubt, particularly given Bayern’s high-profile setbacks in recent windows.
The pressure on Max Eberl and his recruitment team is mounting, with Falk adding: “Afterwards, the bosses are set to come together to debate whether the window was a good one or not for FC Bayern.” A successful Diaz deal may serve as a lifeline for the club’s hierarchy, but failure could force them into a high-profile panic signing.
If Bayern succeed in prising Diaz away, Liverpool may find themselves rapidly exploring replacements. One name emerging from the shadows is Real Madrid’s Rodrygo, who appears to be entering uncertain territory under Xabi Alonso.
Rodrygo has not featured prominently in recent months, and Christian Falk notes the Brazilian “was under-utilised at the FIFA Club World Cup, racking up only 92 minutes out of 540 available.” That limited game time, paired with Real Madrid’s depth in attack, may prompt the forward to consider a new challenge.

While Rodrygo reportedly prefers to remain at Madrid, his lack of minutes and uncertainty under Alonso could shift his thinking. Notably, Bayern fans have voiced interest in the winger, but Falk clarifies that “he’s still not a target on the list for Bayern Munich. It’s just the wish of the fans.”
This may leave the door open for Liverpool, who could see Rodrygo as a ready-made successor to Diaz if the Colombian does move to Bavaria.
Arne Slot, fresh off a historic title-winning debut season, will be determined to strengthen rather than weaken his attacking options. Diaz’s potential departure would be a significant blow, particularly after his strong second half of the 2024–25 season.
Liverpool, though, are not in the business of scrambling. If Diaz does go, it’s likely any successor will have already been identified. Rodrygo ticks many boxes: Champions League experience, positional versatility, and the hunger to re-establish himself in a top league.
There’s no suggestion at present that a bid has been tabled by Liverpool, but the timing and context suggest it would be remiss not to monitor the situation closely.
Xabi Alonso’s arrival may be a dream return for Madrid fans, but it’s already beginning to shake up the status quo. Rodrygo’s uncertain role, especially with his preferred left-wing slot seemingly unavailable, could catalyse movement late in the window.
It’s clear that, should Bayern complete the Diaz transfer, Liverpool will be one of few clubs with the financial and sporting appeal to offer Rodrygo a new home.
As things stand, Falk’s insight points to a highly fluid situation. Bayern’s confidence could yet unravel, much like it did with Wirtz. But if it doesn’t, Liverpool fans should be watching Madrid closely.
While Bayern’s confidence about signing Diaz might worry some Liverpool fans, we urge calm. The club has operated smartly in recent windows, and under Arne Slot, that strategy appears to be evolving in the right direction.
Rodrygo is a fascinating prospect. Still only 24, he offers Champions League pedigree, has played across the front line, and his style of play could be a better fit for the Premier League than La Liga. If Slot sees him as a viable alternative to Diaz, fans should be excited about that possibility.
However, there are still reasons to be cautious. Rodrygo’s desire to stay at Madrid may complicate negotiations, and his wage demands could be high. Moreover, his form has been patchy, and he’s never really nailed down a starting spot consistently.
That said, we’d argue this: if Diaz leaves, Liverpool must respond with intent. A signing like Rodrygo would signal continued ambition under Slot, and in many ways, might suit the team’s transition better. He’s also got the sort of technical quality and work rate that fans at Anfield appreciate.
Let’s not forget, Slot’s title-winning side relied heavily on wide players. Replacing Diaz with a similarly talented but younger and potentially more adaptable player like Rodrygo could be a masterstroke if done at the right price.
