Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich started their Club World Cup by recording the biggest ever win in tournament history against Auckland City.
Jamal Musiala scored a hat-trick whilst Thomas Muller scored twice in his final tournament for Vincent Kompany’s side before he leaves the club later this summer as they ran out 10-0 winners.
This victory comfortably surpassed the previous biggest win at the Club World Cup – Al Hilal’s 6-1 win over Al Jazira in 2022, in what is just the second match of the new format, after an increase from seven teams to 32.
Auckland City, the only part-time team in the competition, came into the match as massive underdogs, and any sort of upset was extinguished six minutes in as Kingsley Coman headed in past goalkeeper Conor Tracey, who was the standout performer for the New Zealand side for obvious reasons.
Sacha Boey scored Bayern’s second of the game 18 minutes in, before Michael Olise and Coman added a third and fourth for The Bavarians within the next three minutes.
Muller scored his first of the game in the 45th minute before Olise wrapped up the first half scoring in the final minute of stoppage time.
Musiala, who had been sidelined with a hamstring injury, marked his return as a 61st minute substitute, and after grabbing Bayern’s seventh of the match six minutes after his introduction, went on to score a further two to seal his second senior treble for the German side.
Kompany’s side completed the scoring in the 89th minute through Muller’s second as they started their Group C campaign in style.
Manuel Neuer had little to nothing to do during the match in Cincinnati as Auckland managed only one attempt at the veteran goalkeeper’s – compared to Bayern’s 31 at the other end of the pitch. The German giants managed to have 17 of those shots on target.
Auckland face Benfica in their second Group C game in Orlando on Friday, 20 June, while Bayern take on Boca Juniors in Miami on Saturday, 21 June.
