Bayer Leverkusen have reached an agreement to sign Emiliano Buendia from Aston Villa on a loan deal until the end of the season, according to journalist Florian Plettenberg.
Buendia, who joined Aston Villa in June 2021 for a club-record €38 million fee at the time, suffered a significant knee injury in August 2023, causing him to miss the entire season.
The Argentine returned to competitive action in September 2024, but he has been unable to nail down a starting berth under manager Unai Emery.
Despite recently extending his current contract by an additional year, Buendia’s long-term future at Villa remains doubtful given his lack of regular game time.
Having lost Martin Terrier to an Achilles injury which will rule him out for the remainder of the season, Leverkusen are looking to bolster their attacking options before the end of the winter transfer window.
They have been linked with a deal for Buendia and Manchester City’s James McAtee, but it is the former who is now reportedly set to move to Germany.
Buneida will be keen to get his career back on track after an injury-plagued couple of seasons.
Off the back of a 2-2 draw against RB Leipzig last time out, Leverkusen are now six points behind Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga table.
With 15 matches left to play, Xabi Alonso’s side face a mammoth task in their quest to win consecutive league titles.
Villa remain in the hunt for a top-four place in the Premier League as they trail Manchester City by four points following a 1-1 stalemate against West Ham United on Sunday.
