Bayer Leverkusen set new German record

Bayer Leverkusen have gone the entire calendar year unbeaten away from home in Germany, becoming the second team to do so. Although Bayern Munich completed this feat in 2013, Xabi Alonso’s side played more away games in 2024 than the Rekordmeister did under Jupp Heynckes and Pep Guardiola.

Alonso’s Leverkusen didn’t lose a single one of their 17 away games in the Bundesliga in 2024, while remaining unbeaten in their two DFB Pokal games, meaning a run of 19 games without defeat, one more than Bayern in 2013.

Die Werkself’s season started with a 1-0 win at Augsburg in January before a 2-0 win against the same opponents at the weekend with Martin Terrier and Florian Wirtz on the scoresheet.

“This away series shows our quality,” said Granit Xhaka. “It is brutally difficult in Augsburg but we did it with total confidence from start to finish – with and without the ball. The hunger is back again.”

Bayer Leverkusen suffered a difficult start to their campaign

Winning three of their opening four games, Leverkusen looked good to retain their Bundesliga title but with just one win in the six games that followed, Bayer found themselves off the pace, unable to replicate their performances from their title winning campaign.

But with four successive wins and Bayern Munich losing 2-1 in Mainz, Alonso’s side now just find themselves four points behind Vincent Kompany’s side and with one game remaining before the winter break, that could close to just one point.

In the final game of 2024, Bayern Munich host RB Leipzig while Bayer Leverkusen welcome Freiburg to the BayArena.
