Marc-Andre ter Stegen has become the big talking point at Barcelona this summer as the club look to desperately trim the squad and reduce the wage bill.

After the addition of Joan Garcia, Ter Stegen has fallen behind in the pecking order, with Barcelona no longer considering him an automatic first-choice goalkeeper.

The Catalans, therefore, are keen on getting rid of ter Stegen, whose salary package ranks among the highest in the team.

Barcelona won’t take any drastic steps

Given the bad blood brewing between the club and the player, one can be forgiven for thinking that Barcelona might want to force the German’s exit by freezing him out of the first team.

However, that is not something Barcelona are considering at the moment.

According to TV3, the Catalans want to make it clear that ter Stegen has every right to fight for his place in the first team.

However, they have informed him that he will no longer be an automatic starter. The German also doesn’t have any automatic preference over Garcia and Wojciech Szczesny.

This is not something that will please the former Gladbach goalkeeper at all. But Barça are clear about their plans and have a lot of faith in both Garcia and Szczesny.

In fact, the report adds that Hansi Flick has already informed ter Stegen he won’t be part of the first-team plans next season, presumably after crunch talks today.

This complete rejection of Ter Stegen in Barcelona’s first-team plans should serve as a statement of intent from the club to the player.

Ter Stegen, however, remains determined to continue at Barça despite knowing that a poor season could derail his opportunities to play for Germany in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

However, the summer is still long, and it will be interesting to see if Barcelona can convince the German to leave the club this summer.
