Yesterday, FC Barcelona made significant progress in their objective of renewing some of their players whose contracts are running out in the next two years as Ronald Araujo signed his new contract after a lengthy negotiation process.

In this context, SPORT notes that there are two other players at the Blaugrana club who are playing a very important role in the team this season but whose renewals are going to be special cases.

These players are Robert Lewandowski and Iñigo Martínez, as both of these players have clauses in their contracts that will automatically extend their association with Barcelona if they play a certain amount of games this season.

In the case of the Polish forward, his current contract ends in 2025, but if he plays 55% of games this season, this contract will be extended for another season. As things stand, he has played 29 out of 31 games played by Flick’s side this season, and thus he is highly likely to reach the 55% figure of games.

But even if the stay, the Blaugrana club will have to make a decision on whether they should get a long-term replacement for him, as Lewandowski is already 36 years of age. If he continues to perform at the level he has shown up to now, the Catalans might go another year without getting a replacement as Dani Olmo has also proven himself an effective replacement for the Pole.

Similarly, the Basque defender will have to play 60% of games for at least 45 minutes to activate the automatic renewal clause. Before his injury, he was a key part of Hansi Flick’s backline, playing 27 of 31 games played by the Catalans, but with Araujo’s return, it remains to be seen what his status will be once he returns to availability.

Still, there is no doubt that the German tactician values him for his footballing role and his leadership skills. Thus, both of these players are quite likely to remain at Barcelona for another year.
