Barcelona veteran set to extend his contract even as club look for a new forward | OneFootball

Barcelona are gearing up for a busy summer ahead, where one of the club’s top priorities will be to sign a new forward, reports Fabrizio Romano.

The club are mindful about the fact that Robert Lewandowski is in the final phase of his career and the team lacks a viable alternative.

Lewandowski to extend his contract

That being said, Barcelona are banking on Lewandowski to continue leading the club’s frontline, at least in the short term.

That is because the Polish international looks all set to renew his contract at Camp Nou for another year.

This comes on the back of Lewandowski’s stellar performances this season, with the former Bayern Munich striker racking up as many as 34 goals in all competitions – surpassing his first season’s tally at Barcelona.

Lewandowski has been crucial in Barcelona’s three-pronged attacking setup, consisting him, Lamine Yamal and Raphinha, which has terrorised opposition defences this season.

It must be noted that the initial extension clause in Lewandowski’s contract has automatically been triggered, meaning his current deal at Barça expires in 2026.

But it appears Barça are keen on sealing a new deal entirely, which could see him remain at the club until 2027. The new deal, however, is likely to include a mutual exit clause, which can be activated next year.

As mentioned earlier, Barcelona are also looking for new strikers in the market, who can serve as a long-term replacement for Lewandowski in the years to come.

One of the options is Alexander Isak of Newcastle United, although it appears the Magpies are demanding a staggering €170 million for the Swede’s services.

There are no shortage of alternatives available in the market. But as things stand, Lewandowski will extend his contract at Barça and the duration of his contract could be extended until 2027.
