Barcelona star tested in surprise new position vs Mallorca | OneFootball

A member of the midfield ranks at La Liga giants Barcelona was on Saturday evening tested in a new and surprising role.

The player in question? Frenkie de Jong.

Barcelona were of course back in action a short time ago.

In the opening fixture of the defence of their Spanish top-flight title, the Blaugrana made the trip to Son Moix, for a meeting with RCD Mallorca.

When all was said and done, Hansi Flick’s troops emerged on the right side of a 3-0 result, courtesy of goals on the part of Raphinha, Ferran Torres, and Lamine Yamal.

The aforementioned Frenkie de Jong was for his part in from the off at Son Moix, from his customary berth at the base of midfield.

As alluded to above, though, during the 2nd-half, the former Ajax man slotted into an altogether unfamiliar role.

As Hansi Flick shook up his XI with Barca cruising to an opening day three-point haul, De Jong dropped into the visitors’ backline, at centre-back.
