A leading member of the midfield ranks at La Liga giants Barcelona has been afforded a fresh international call-up.

The player in question? Frenkie de Jong.

Midfielder De Jong has of course spent recent weeks reestablishing himself as one of the first names on the team sheet of boss Hansi Flick.

Owing to a string of standout performances, the former Ajax man appears to have usurped Marc Casadó in the Blaugrana’s engine room pecking order.

De Jong, all told, has featured from the off in six of Barca’s last eight outings across all competitions.

And the 27-year-old’s excellence across this stretch has evidently not gone unnoticed on the part of the Dutch national team staff.

This comes amid confirmation that De Jong has been included in the Netherlands’ latest squad.

The Oranje are set to return to action in March, when they lock horns with Spain in a pair of Nations League quarter-final fixtures.
