Barcelona Sporting Director Deco reportedly made negotiating a new contract with Frenkie de Jong a priority this year, but it appears there has been a change of tact. The latest coming out of the Catalan capital claims that relations are still tense with the Dutch midfielder.

It was well-documented that in the previous two summers de Jong was available on the market, although last summer a less obvious effort was made to shift him. Sport say that Deco’s intention was to sell the Dutch midfielder this summer as well, feeling that after five years at the club, he is still yet to show enough on the pitch.

In addition, he has a high salary, and his agent is not considered ‘friendly’ with the club. From his point of view, de Jong and his camp are not happy with Barcelona as they know the player has been offered to ‘all of Europe’ without his consent. Yet with de Jong showing no desire to leave, and now an injury too, he is likely to stay this summer.

De Jong continues to be an area of frustration for all involved. In stretches, he has shown just how useful he can be, and he was instrumental in their title win last season, but that was alongside Sergio Busquets. Arguably he has not been given the right structure to succeed in outside of that year, but neither has he made a position his own either.
