According to SPORT, Barcelona have set a deadline of July 6 to pay Nico Williams’ release clause, which stands at €62 million (made up of €58 million plus adjustments).

While the club could choose to pay it earlier, they prefer to include the deal in the budget for the 2025-26 season.

This strategy is important to ensure Barcelona meets LaLiga’s financial fair play requirements, which remain a top priority for the club’s management.

Barcelona can pull this off

Even with Athletic Club making moves to complicate the operation, Barça remain confident they will complete the signing.

Sources from the club have informed that there are no liquidity issues, and the revenue from VIP seat sales combined with ongoing player departures should provide enough funds to cover the transfer without needing to activate any additional financial levers.

Interestingly, paying the release clause before June 30, right at the end of the current financial year, could reduce the tax burden slightly, making the operation a bit cheaper for Barça. However, that reduction would be very minimal.

Nico ready for a long-term commitment

On the player’s side, Nico has already reached an agreement with Barcelona for a six-year contract. His new salary is expected to be around €7-8 million net per season.

The deal came together quickly in recent weeks after a fresh meeting between Nico’s agent and Barça’s sporting director, Deco.

This time, there were no doubts from the young winger that he wants to wear the Blaugrana shirt.

Although it was first thought that Nico might rejoin Athletic Club training on July 9, Barcelona actually have time until July 16 to finalise everything.

But the club’s leadership is determined to close the signing before the July 6 deadline so that Nico can join the team early in preseason and start working under Hansi Flick as soon as possible.
