One of the most complicated matters that Barcelona are currently dealing with is Frenkie de Jong’s contract situation. The Dutch midfielder has previously snubbed the chance to renew, and with his current deal set to expire at the end of next season, preparations are being made for him to be put on the market.
In recent months, de Jong has lost a lot of prominence at Barcelona. He is no longer a regular starter, and when he has played, his performances have flattered to deceive. As such, club bosses are no longer prepared to do whatever it takes to secure his future, as per MD.
Barcelona have been hoping to agree a salary reduction with de Jong as part of contract negotiations, but the player himself does not want to earn less money. However, the club will not budge on this unless he improves his performances over the remainder of the season, meaning that the pressure is firmly on.
If de Jong is transfer-listed by Barcelona ahead of next summer, they would not be short on interest – a number of Premier League clubs have been linked, as well as Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain. Right now, it seems more likely that he will depart.
