The future of Frenkie de Jong is set to be a key topic of discussion at Barcelona in these last few months of the season.

The Dutchman has proven himself to be a key player under Hansi Flick since the turn of the year, with Barcelona now keen on extending his contract, which expires in 2026.

De Jong’s form has been particularly important in recent months, as he has established himself as a reliable option for Barcelona in the middle of the park, while his experience and leadership have been crucial in leading an otherwise inexperienced midfield.

De Jong set to stay at Barcelona

A recent report from Miguel Rico (h/t Carpetas FCB) has suggested that de Jong is likely to stay at Barcelona unless the midfielder receives an ‘extraordinary offer’ from elsewhere.

Sporting Director Deco is pushing for a contract renewal and sees de Jong as a vital part of the club’s long-term plans.

While De Jong’s contract runs until 2026, Barça are well aware that time moves quickly. If they don’t secure a renewal by next year, they risk him entering the final year of his deal.

But given the current financial landscape at Barça, this won’t be a straightforward process.

De Jong is one of the highest-paid players in the squad – a contract structure agreed under the previous board.

Therefore, Barcelona would ideally like the midfielder to accept a salary reduction in line with the new wage structure being implemented.

Unlike recent renewals involving younger stars like Gavi, Pedri, or Ronald Araujo, negotiations with De Jong’s camp are expected to be more complex.

But with the player more than happy in Barcelona, everything suggests the Dutchman will remain at Camp Nou beyond 2026.
