Barcelona have come a long way from the days of Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets commanding the middle of the park.

All three legends are no longer at the club, and while the former enjoyed a successful stint as the club’s manager, the rest continue their professional football careers.

At 40 years old, Iniesta continues to enjoy playing. After a stint at Vissel Kobe, the veteran currently plays for Emirates Club in the UAE and is nearing the twilight of his playing days.

Speaking to SPORT in a recent interview, the Barcelona legend commented on Xavi’s recent tenure and departure from Barcelona earlier this year. He also provided an update on his future plans.

On Xavi’s sacking

The World Cup-winning midfielder began by revealing the special bond he shares with Xavi and the rough summer the Spaniard endured, especially in terms of the manner of his sacking.

“From the outside, it has not been easy in the sense of how they have developed or how things have happened. It is the only thing you can say, he is my friend and the situation as it has happened has not been the most suitable.

“Nevertheless, it has happened like this and from there everyone will look for the best. The club for the club and we will see Xavi soon where he can continue training,” he added, expressing optimism that both parties will find their footing moving forward.

On his future

Iniesta was then asked what he planned for the future and whether he wanted to pursue coaching like his friend Xavi, to which he said,

“I’m thinking about it right now, I don’t know anything today. Yes, I am considering obtaining a coaching license this year.

“We are going to see if I can continue playing football or otherwise have to stop my activity as a soccer player. Let’s see what happens in the coming weeks,” he added on his immediate future.

Finally, the club legend was asked if he saw a return to Barcelona in some capacity in the future and he did not close the door to the possibility.

“It will never change my feeling that I wish, and at some point in my life and my profession, the possibility of returning to Barça would arise. Because the context is good because everything is set for it to happen.”

“But today talking about what or how doesn’t make sense now, though I would like to, of course.

What I want as a goal is to be able to get the title of coach and we will see what happens and what life has in store and where we will be. It’s one of my goals,” he added.
