Sergio Busquets, one of Barcelona’s greatest-ever midfielders, has spoken out about former Spain teammate Xabi Alonso, now the new manager of Real Madrid.

The two were key figures in Spain’s iconic 2010 World Cup win, forming a solid partnership in midfield.

Today, their paths have diverged, with Busquets still playing for Inter Miami alongside fellow Barça legends Messi, Suarez, and Jordi Alba, while Alonso begins his biggest test yet as head coach of Los Blancos.

Speaking after Alonso’s official debut, a 1-1 draw against Al-Hilal in the FIFA Club World Cup, Busquets reflected on the qualities that always hinted Alonso would one day go into coaching.

“You never really know who will end up as a coach,” Busquets admitted, “but it is clear that central midfielders usually see the game differently. They’re involved in everything and tend to think a lot about the game.”

Respect for a rival, but loyalty to Barça

Busquets was full of praise for the former Real Real midfielder. “Xabi always loved football. He spoke well, understood what was going on, and had great vision during matches. You could tell he had what it takes to become a good coach,” he said.

“He’s doing well so far, both during his time at Bayer and now at Real Madrid.”

However, the Barça icon made it clear where his heart lies. With a smile, he added, “I hope things go well for him personally, but of course, I want another team to win.”

Busquets’ words reflect the deep mutual respect between two legends of Spanish football, while also reminding everyone of the eternal rivalry between Barcelona and Real Madrid. Even far from Europe, Busquets is still proudly waving the Barça flag.
