Barcelona key veteran star’s contract renewal will be sealed soon – Romano | OneFootball

Over the past month, FC Barcelona secured a spree of contract renewals, tying down the likes of Ronald Araujo, Gavi, Pedri, Gerard Martin, and Pau Cubarsi to new long-term contracts.

The Catalans’ sporting department, led by Deco, is far from being done as they are now focusing on more contract extensions in the coming weeks.

One player whose contract renewal is pretty much taken for granted is Inigo Martinez.

The 33-year-old veteran, who has become an integral member of the team this season under Hansi Flick, was supposed to sign a new deal in January itself, but it did not come to happen.

Providing an update on the situation, journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that Inigo Martinez and Barcelona have agreed terms over a new contract in January and his renewal will be sealed soon.

Martinez’s current deal runs out at the end of the season but has an option for an automatic one-year extension if he plays 60% of the matches this season – which he is on track to do.

However, having been impressed by his performances under Flick, Barcelona decided not to wait for the clause and held negotiations over a new extension until 2026, with an agreement over a €4 million-per-year deal also being reached.

But the lack of Fair Play margin has put the renewal on hold with the Blaugrana not being in a position to announce it officially.

Despite that, Martinez’s new contract is not in jeopardy and as per Romano, it will be sealed soon, keeping the veteran defender at the Catalan outfit for one more season until June 2026.

Martinez arrived at Barcelona in 2023, signing as a free agent after his contract at Athletic Club expired. The Spanish international endured a difficult debut season at the club but has become an asset under Flick this time around.
