Real Madrid’s open war with the refereeing association in Spain, in many ways, has opened up a debate about the quality of officials in La Liga.
More than the referees, the VAR, in particular, has faced immense criticism, for its poor implementation in Spain and inconsistent outcomes.
To that end, Barcelona sporting director Deco, in a recent interview with SPORT, has offered his view on VAR.
When asked about whether or not there have been too many refereeing errors in La Liga lately, Deco did not hesitate to bring up the VAR debate.
“Refereeing errors have always existed, because it is a human thing. The only thing I am not clear about is how the VAR is helping. What has it improved?,” Deco questioned.
The Barcelona director pointed out how there have been far too many controversies in La Liga matches revolving around VAR decisions.
“Surely some things have, but we are still having controversies. I have the feeling that the VAR has made the situation worse: there are more discussions, more debates, more suspicions,” he said.

“There are several more complicated things. A debate needs to be opened on this issue. In theory, it has to be something to improve, but I don’t see how much it helps. It is true that there is an element of interpretation and that will always be difficult,” he added.
Real Madrid have tried to open up a conversation regarding the implementation of VAR, but the club have faced immense criticism from the authorities in Spain.
Not to mention, the reigning Spanish champions have not received much support from their opponents, even though Barcelona have not openly put out any statement against their arch-rivals.
Nevertheless, Deco went on to point out the cases of Pedri and Fermin Lopez and Pedri.
“Fermin was sent off in our case and two days before there was a hard tackle on Pedri. To what extent does the VAR intervene? I am not speaking as a sporting director but as a spectator. Sometimes I have doubts about what the VAR has improved,” he concluded.
