Speaking at the ‘Thinking Football’ conferences in Porto, FC Barcelona sporting director Deco has confirmed that he has already begun working on the squad for next season with the focus being on closing some important renewals.

Deco oversaw his second summer transfer window in charge during which he made the most of a difficult situation, having had his hands tied due to Barcelona’s Financial Fair Play situation.

Heading into 2025, Barcelona have some important decisions to make with regard to the contracts of some important players and Deco provided an insight into his plans.

“I’m already working on next season,” said Deco, as quoted by SPORT.

“We have to make important renewals in the coming months,” he added, highlighting the closing of some new contracts as one of his major focus areas in the coming days.

The players whose contracts are to be renewed

As reported earlier today, Barcelona are hoping to secure the contract extensions of as many as five key players in the near future.

The list starts with two captains Ronald Araujo and Frenkie de Jong, both of whom have their current deals expiring in 2026. Efforts to renew their deals have been going on for some time now and the Catalans will hope to finally close the matter.

Apart from them, Pedri, whose contract runs out in 2026, is also an important renewal that Barça need to secure.

In addition to these established stars, Barcelona are also working to renew two young talents in Marc Bernal and Fermin Lopez, both of whom are seen as an integral part of the club’s future.

Three players’ contracts expiring next year

Beyond that, Deco and Barcelona will also have to make decisions about the contract situations of Robert Lewandowski, Inigo Martinez, and Gerard Martin, all of whom will be free agents in 2025.

Lewandowski’s contract has a condition where an automatic one-year renewal can be activated if he plays a certain number of matches this season. The same holds for Martinez as well.

As for Gerard Martin, the Catalans are expected to hold talks over a new deal considering that manager Hansi Flick is impressed by the youngster.
