FC Barcelona remains in a position where the club must make some difficult choices. Unfortunately, the club is still not where it would ideally like to be at in terms of its own financial strength. As a direct consequence of that, Barcelona is struggling with certain transfer targets as well.

However, despite it being expected that the Catalan giants would have returned to the 1:1 rule by now, their reality seems to be far different. In fact, the club is now reportedly even evaluating the possibility of making a high-value sale this summer.

Still, beyond just the transfer operations or levers involved, there was renewed hope for the club in regards to the upcoming Joan Gamper trophy. Expected to take place at the new Spotify Camp Nou on the 10th of August and act as the opening of the improved stadium, there was much to be excited about.

Unfortunately, it seems now that Barça’s ideal attendance of 60,000 fans for the Joan Gamper trophy now seems unrealistic. According to AS, even a minimum projection of 25,000 fans being there is considered a task too big for right now.

A major blow for Barcelona

In reality, the club is not getting the approval they would have needed for that from the Barcelona City Council. As a result of that, the club’s most realistic objective is to seek and secure a provisional opening permit, as it would allow the match to at least be played at the Spotify Camp Nou even if it is with a small attendance.

Yet, this would still be a major blow for Barcelona considering their hopes for this match. Ideally, the club wanted to use this occasion to unveil their new VIP boxes to prove their existence and completion. In turn, this would have allowed the auditor and La Liga to approve the €100 million revenue from the lever and sale of said seats.

Unfortunately, even the match taking place at the new Camp Nou is not a guarantee for now. Ultimately, if Barcelona fails to manage that, the match would have to be moved to the Estadi Johan Cruyff and it would undeniably be a major blow to the club.
