The goalkeeping area of the FC Barcelona first team is set to undergo a significant change ahead of the start of the 2025-26 season. The Catalans are reportedly very near to completing the signing of the RCD Espanyol goalie Joan Garcia, and have already paid his release clause.

The Spaniard’s arrival will naturally have a direct impact on the goalkeepers already present in the Blaugrana squad. However, the player who will be affected the most with this move will be the captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who is set to lose his starting spot to Garcia, and will actually be the third-placed goalkeeper in the squad as Wojciech Szczesny is going to be the back-up.

Ter Stegen facing an uncertain future

But a player of ter Stegen’s stature would not be too happy with such a situation, especially with the World Cup starting in a year’s time and him looking to start for the German national team.

Thus, although in his public statements he has claimed that he aims to continue at Barcelona, he will have to rethink his future, and fortunately, there are no shortage of suitors for him.

Already reached an agreement with Galatasaray

In fact, Mundo Deportivo cites sources from Turkey to claim that the Turkish club Galatasaray has already reached a personal agreement with the goalkeeper. Now, they will have to negotiate with Barcelona for his signing, as the German shot-stopper has a contract till 2028.

Galatasaray have already shown their intent in the market by the surprise signing of the German winger Leroy Sane, and they need to sign a reliable goalkeeper following the departure of Muslera.

The Turks are looking to sign ter Stegen for free, so they can save from his transfer fee to invest in his wages. Barcelona might not be too keen to allow such a high-value asset to leave for free, but might be tempted by the prospect of saving three years’ worth of high wages that they are bound to pay the goalkeeper.
