Barcelona’s summer transfer plans took a major blow today as their top target, Nico Williams, ended up signing a new long-term contract with Athletic Club.
The U-turn came out of nowhere, considering that up until Thursday night, it was expected that a move to Barça was only a matter of time.
Now, according to Catalunya Radio, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has been left disappointed following the sudden collapse of the Nico Williams transfer.
The German tactician was anticipating the 22-year-old winger’s arrival and believed that he was going to be a key addition and an important player for the team under him moving forward.

The Blaugrana had been working to sign Nico in time for the start of the pre-season on July 13 so as to ensure that Flick had the player at his disposal as soon as possible.
But everything fell apart after Nico’s agent, Felix Tainta, pushed for written guarantees over registration, something that the Blaugrana were unwilling to accept.
Now, having missed out on Nico, Barcelona are exploring other options, with Luis Diaz and Marcus Rashford at the top of the club’s wishlist as alternative targets.
Only time will tell who Deco & co. will sign, but Flick is disappointed with the failed deal for Nico and like Barça, those close to the German tactician also hold the player’s agent responsible for it.
