Wojciech Szczesny and Barcelona seem open to continuing their association for another season, according to recent reports from SPORT.
The decision, however, will largely depend on the Polish goalkeeper’s performances between now and the end of the season.
This means if Szczesny maintains his upward form, which has been impressive after a somewhat inconsistent start, Barcelona are likely to extend his stay.
Initially, Szczesny’s plan was to make it a short-term stint at Barcelona. However, things have changed over time.
As the weeks have gone by, Szczesny has rediscovered his competitive edge and enthusiasm for professional football. In 2025, he has taken up a leading role as Barcelona’s starting goalkeeper.

Initially brought in to serve as a mentor for younger players, Szczesny is now a key figure on the field, gaining confidence with each passing match as Barcelona approaches the decisive part of the season.
While it is still early to make definitive decisions, Barcelona are already considering offering Szczesny a contract extension. This decision will depend on a few factors, starting with his consistency and solidity as the season progresses.
The club will also take into account Inaki Pena’s situation, as it is unclear whether Pena will seek a move or if Barça will place their trust in young prospects like Ander Astralaga or Diego Kochen.
Additionally, Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s recovery from knee surgery will play a crucial role in shaping the club’s plans.
Szczesny and his family have settled well in Barcelona, making the idea of continuing at the club appealing. Even if he becomes Ter Stegen’s backup, Szczesny seems open to staying.
Both Barcelona and Szczesny are in no rush to finalise their decision. The club understands that Szczesny’s only two options are staying at Barça or retiring, making them comfortable to assess his performance and finalise their strategy.
