Barcelona’s thrilling 4-3 win over Celta Vigo has reignited concerns surrounding Frenkie de Jong’s ability to play as the defensive pivot, with SPORT reporting that the Dutch midfielder is showing worrying signs of defensive fragility, an issue that could have larger implications.

The report zeroes in on Borja Iglesias’ second goal, where De Jong’s hesitant positioning and indecisiveness allowed the striker to finish with ease.

In particular, De Jong appeared to back off from the challenge, seemingly confused by Inigo Martínez’s run-in. While such moments can occasionally happen in football, this was not an isolated incident.

De Jong struggled to assert authority

Throughout the game, and increasingly across recent fixtures, De Jong’s lack of positional discipline has been evident.

He often vacates the crucial space just in front of the centre-backs—a zone vital in Hansi Flick’s high-risk system where full-backs push up aggressively.

In theory, the pivot needs to drop back almost as a third centre-back when the team is out of possession, but this tactical requirement is proving a genuine struggle for De Jong.

His ability to build play and progress the ball remains world-class, but defensively, the role demands a level of spatial awareness and discipline he has yet to consistently show.

Flick continues to support him

Despite this, Flick continues to back the Dutchman without hesitation. In fact, the German has personally endorsed the club’s desire to extend De Jong’s contract.

His current deal runs until 2026, meaning Barcelona must either renew him this summer or entertain serious offers to avoid a repeat of previous contract stand-offs.

Talks are already underway between Deco and De Jong’s agent, Ali Dursun, though the midfielder will likely need to accept reduced terms compared to his current high salary.

For now, De Jong’s commitment to Barcelona appears unchanged. He remains well-integrated into the dressing room and has publicly expressed his desire to continue at the club.

However, to truly become the indispensable pivot Hansi Flick envisions, he must address the defensive gaps in his game.
