Girona forward Artem Dovbyk was certainly one of the hottest names on the gossip pages at the close of the season. The Ukrianian finished as the top scorer in La Liga, winning the Pichichi award with 24 goals, and has caught the eye of Atletico Madrid.
Yet Dovbyk’s showing at Euro 2024 has certainly helped dampen the hype, as he returns from the tournament without having had a single shot on target for Ukraine during his three showings. As per Diario AS, Atletico are hoping that this serves them to negotiate a lower price with Girona.
Originally they had a €25m offer turned down, as Girona Sporting Director Quique Carcel holds out for his €40m release clause. His counterpart Andrea Berta has not changed his mind about Dovbyk and is hoping to do a deal for closer to €30m, but the same source believe Girona will likely be just as unfazed by his lack of production at Euro 2024. With no necessity to sell, they will continue to demand €40m.
It remains to be seen whether there will be any wiggle room on that figure, but they have the added benefit of competition for his signature. Italian side Napoli have been in talks with Dovbyk’s agents in recent weeks, and figures of €30-35m were mentioned, albeit Victor Osimhen would likely have to leave first for the Partenopei to make a move.
