Atlético de Madrid strengthened their bid for a third-place finish in LaLiga with a 3-0 win over Rayo Vallecano

Alexander Sørloth opened the scoring after just three minutes by rising above Pedro Díaz to meet Giuliano Simeone's cross from the right with a powerful header.

The Colchoneros doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time when Conor Gallagher converted Rodigo De Paul's ball over the top in the middle of the area.

In the second half, Julián Alvarez rounded things off during the closing stages by squeezing a right-footed effort past Augusto Batalla at his lefthand post.

Atleti consolidated their six-point cushion over fourth-placed Athletic Club while maintaining a similar shortfall to neighbours Real Madrid, who sit above them.
