Aston Villa missed out on Champions League football last season, finishing sixth. They were level on points with the team in fifth but fell below on goal difference. A defeat to Manchester United on the final day of the campaign did the damage for Villa.
Unai Emery’s men were tough to beat at home in the Premier League last season, losing just one game. That was in their first home match of the season, with Villa unbeaten in the next 18. Seven of those 18 games were draws but Villa ended with five consecutive home victories.
Newcastle were the team to finish above Aston Villa, and they were grateful for the Villans’ final day defeat. That’s because Newcastle also lost their final game of the season. But they had done enough before to secure the fifth and final Champions League spot.
Newcastle were underwhelming away from home in the league last season. The Magpies lost seven of their 19 matches on the road alongside four draws — with eight wins. They went winless in their final three away games of the season, losing two including a 4-1 defeat at Villa Park.
Emiliano Martinez will be suspended for Villa’s opening game of the season — should he still be at the club. The goalkeeper was sent off on the final day of the 2024-25 campaign.
Lewis Hall hopes to be fit by the opening game of campaign, but it all depends on how his pre-season goes.
Aston Villa won the most recent meeting between these two sides, but Newcastle have generally dominated the fixture. The Magpies have won five of the past seven — though just one of those wins has come at Villa Park.
