Aston Villa have struck an agreement with Villarreal over a deal to sign Pau Torres, according to The Athletic.
With just one year left on his contract, Torres was linked with a move to Bayern Munich in recent days but the Bundesliga giants are close to completing a swoop for Napoli’s Kim Min-jae instead.
Having already agreed personal terms, Torres is set to become Villa’s second signing of the Premier League transfer window following the earlier arrival of Youri Tielemans from Leicester City as a free agent.
The 26-year-old is entering his prime and represents a fantastic acquisition for a Villa side currently in the ascendancy after finishing seventh in the recently-concluded Premier League season thanks to a resurgent second half of the campaign.
Unai Emery previously worked with Torres in Spain where they both won a Europa League title together, and the Villa manager was keen on a reunion as he prepares for his first full season in charge.
As his side close in on another summer addition, Emery will be expecting further incomings after revealing that Villa were in for a busy summer due to the added burden of European football.
“I will now start preparing for next season, the club is working and I am keeping in touch with the possibilities we can add [signings] for next year,” the Spaniard was quoted saying.
“We will start now thinking about the next project and be stronger than we have been.
“We have to analyse everything as best as possible about how we can create and build our structure with the players in our squad. Now is about being thankful with every player given the work they did.”
Leeds United’s Tyler Adams is next on Villa’s shopping list, while Harvey Barnes also remains a target for the west Midlands outfit.
