Aston Villa sent representatives to watch Mainz 05 attacking midfielder Nadiem Amiri against Borussia Dortmund earlier this month, according to German journalist Christian Falk.
Villa manager Unai Emery wants to bolster his attacking ranks and would have received a favourable report from his scouts on the five-time Germany international.
The 28-year-old impressed as his side ran out 3-1 winners against the Champions League finalists from last season.
He resumed action after the international break with a goal to help Mainz secure a 3-0 win against Holstein Kiel.
Amiri is contracted to the Bundesliga club until 2028, but around €10 million could be enough for the Villa Park club to land him.
The Midlands outfit are desperate to strengthen their squad after a stuttering seven-game winless in all competitions, and some quality January additions will come in handy.
Villa have gone three games without scoring in those fixtures, including the goalless draw against Juventus in the Champions League last night.
They badly need to bolster their attacking ranks heading into the second half of the campaign.
Amiri was once close to joining Leeds United while he was at Bayer Leverkusen, travelling to England for talks before opting against a move.
He could be given another chance to play in the country if Villa come calling in the January transfer window.
