The context 📅

The Rouge et Blanc began this 108th Côte d’Azur derby in the top flight with the desire to erase the disappointment of the reverse fixture, lostnwith a man down at the Allianz Riviera (2-1). But also with the desire to reverse the trend at home against Les Aiglons, where they remained on a run of two defeats. All the more so because of the situation in the table, where both teams had the same number of  points (47)… and even the same goal difference (+19).

When you look at the standings, Saturday's matchup is obviously all the more exciting as we have the same number of points and the same goal difference! So it's a match that has a lot of interest for both teams, and we're ready to play it.

The XI 👥

To start this big game of Matchday 27, Adi Hütter decided to opt for a flat 4-4-2, with Wilfried Singo starting on the right of defense. The Camara-Zakaria duo was lined up in midfield, while the Monaco attack was led by the Biereth-Embolo duo.

The scenario 🎞

The 108th Côte d’Azur derby in the top flight got off to a fiery start in the stands… but also on the pitch! Breel Embolo quickly earned a penalty that Mika Biereth would take, but Bulka unfortunately saved it (5′). The Rouge et Blanc pressed hard for this opening goal, before Takumi Minamino hit the crossbar with a sublime curling shot (8′).

Success eludes the Rouge et Blanc

The Japanese attacker, very involved, then found Maghnes Akliouche back, whose cutback was deflected for a corner (17′). Then, it was Les Aiglons who showed themselves to be enterprising through Rosario (24′), Boga (26′) and Abdi (34′), each time from distance, but without success. The match was thus balanced, but on a breakthrough from Denis Zakaria, the Monaco number 11 almost beat the Nice goalkeeper (37′).

MikaGOAL levels the score!

A stroke of luck followed, as Boga finally opened the scoring with a header from a Clauss cross (41′, 0-1), which allowed Le Gym to take the lead at half-time. The second half started like the first, with Monaco applying a lot of pressure, and it paid off with a superb ball from Akliouche to Mika Biereth, who found the top corner 1-1, 56′)!

A well-connected duo

It was a twelfth Ligue 1 goal for the Dane, and his 11th already at home, and the Academy-trained playmakers seventh assist in the top flight. They’re a duo that’s on fire, as they showed with Mika providing the pass and Maghnes finishing, but for Bulka’s intervention (60′). The match then became a bit wild, but neither Zakaria (62′) nor Guessand (68′) could tip the scales.

Breel, the difference maker!

But as a derby always has surprises in store, and with another very good piece of work from Maghnes Akliouche, Breel Embolo turned the marking and slipped his shot home perfectly (2-1, 73;)! The Stade Louis-II was full of joy at this fifth goal by the Swiss striker this season, which is warmly celebrated by his teammates.

And for good reason, as after a final situation for the returning Folarin Balogun (82′) and seven long minutes of added time, the Rouge et Blanc retained the advantage and won with character this Côte d’Azur Derby (2-1). DAGHE MUNEGU!!! 🇲🇨
