The England u21s took on the Netherlands in the u21 Euros semi-finals on Wednesday night, and Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri was initially named on the bench.

Nwaneri has been in and out of the England team so far, making three substitute appearances and two starts, but he won’t mind much as long as the Young Lions keep winning.

Harvey Elliott gave England the lead on Wednesday, but they were quickly pegged back by a Noah Ohio equaliser. Nwaneri was introduced to try and find a winner, and a minute later Elliott scored it for a final score of 2-1.

Arsenal-linked Jorrel Hato played the full 90 minutes for the losing side, having also played the full match in every previous fixture at the Euros. His tournament is now over.

For the third time this tournament, Nwaneri came on for England’s starting striker.

The Arsenal youngster replaced centre-forward Jonathan Rowe on the opening day against the Czech Republic, and he’s replaced Jay Stansfield in the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the Euros. Stansfield had taken Rowe’s place up front for the knockout stages.

Nwaneri did play in a wide role in his two starts of the Euros so far against Slovenia and Germany, but Lee Carsley clearly views him as an option at centre-forward as well.

England now face a final against Germany on Saturday, June 28th at 20:00 BST, after which Nwaneri can finally begin his summer holidays. Ideally, with a winner’s medal to take home with him.
