Arsenal’s Ceadach O’Neill has been showered with praise following his standout performance for Northern Ireland U17s in their 3-1 victory over the Republic of Ireland in the UEFA U17 European Championship qualifiers.

It was a match that highlighted both the player’s individual brilliance and his rapid development since joining Arsenal’s U18 side this summer as he scored, grabbed an assist and forced an own goal.

Northern Ireland U17s head coach Andy Waterworth, clearly elated by his squad’s performance, highlighted the collective effort, while O’Neill’s contribution was particularly notable.

O’Neill’s goal, a superb finish midway through the second half, demonstrated his technical ability and composure under pressure—qualities that have become evident since his move to London. The rest of his performance wasn’t bad, either.

O’Neill’s move to Arsenal was made official in July, when the club secured his signature from Northern Ireland’s most successful side, Linfield.

The teenager, capable of operating both as an attacking midfielder and a winger, has made an instant impact at Arsenal.

On his debut for the U18s, O’Neill netted twice in a 3-2 victory over West Ham. His promising display drew immediate attention, with the youngster expressing his excitement: “I’m buzzing,” O’Neill said after the match. “Great start to the season, and hopefully I can keep doing that in the games coming up.”

O’Neill’s journey to Arsenal began when he impressed during a trial stint, including playing in the Flamengo Adidas Cup in Brazil. His performances during that period led to reports in March that a move was imminent, and by July, Arsenal had completed the deal.

Kilrea GAC confirmed the transfer, stating that the young talent had moved to London on a three-year contract, which will see him become eligible for a professional deal next April when he turns 17.

In his short time at Arsenal, O’Neill has quickly settled into his new surroundings. “I’ve settled in well,” he said. “It’s very homely here. It’s a good club to be at, and I’m happy to be here.”

His early success and confident displays on the pitch indicate that Arsenal may have unearthed another exciting prospect.

Waterworth’s Northern Ireland side now head into their next qualifier against Lithuania with a place in Round 2 League A already secured.

With performances like O’Neill’s, the future looks bright for both club and country as the young guns continue to impress.
