As Arsenal begin shaping their midfield for the 2025/26 season, uncertainty remains over the future of Thomas Partey. The Ghanaian international, now entering the final stretch of his contract at the Emirates Stadium, has spoken candidly about his situation, revealing that the decision over a renewal is not in his hands.
In an interview with Ghanaian broadcaster TV3, Partey was open about his desire for stability at this stage in his career, highlighting the importance of family and long-term happiness when considering his next move.

“I think the first thing is where are you happy? Where do you feel at home? And then what is your next objective and what do you want to achieve next?” he said. “There are a lot of things. You have to look now where your family will be happy. When you are young, you can just go anywhere. I can’t decide anything, it’s up to my agent and the club. Me, I just want to enjoy football.”
Those remarks will be of interest to Arsenal fans hoping the 31-year-old remains in North London, particularly after manager Mikel Arteta publicly stated his preference to keep the midfielder. Partey’s presence, when fit, has been vital for Arteta’s tactical setup and dressing room leadership.
With Jorginho recently sealing a move to Flamengo, Arsenal have already started their midfield overhaul. Sources close to the club indicate that Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi is the primary target to fill that gap, with a £51 million deal expected to be completed in the coming weeks.
Should Partey also depart, the Gunners would be in the market for at least one more central midfielder this summer, underlining the scale of change anticipated in that area of the pitch.
Retaining Partey could be part of a strategy to blend youth with experience, especially with Declan Rice settling into a long-term role. Arsenal’s decision-makers are weighing up whether to offer Partey fresh terms or allow his contract to expire, potentially freeing up wages and space for a younger profile.
However, Partey’s technical qualities, ability to break up play and progress the ball through midfield still provide Arteta with a valuable option. Any new signing would be expected to offer similar versatility, which is not easily found in the market.
While negotiations continue behind the scenes, Partey’s statements make it clear that his preference would be to remain at Arsenal, provided the club and his agent align on terms. For now, all options remain open as the Gunners prepare for a critical summer window.
