Edu has been the club’s sporting director for the past two years
Arsenal’s sporting director Edu has resigned with immediate effect.
The Brazilian was appointed technical director in 2019, before he was then promoted to become the club’s first-ever sporting director two years ago.
Edu, who made 127 appearances for the Gunners as a player, has overseen the men’s and women’s teams since then, as well as the academy sides.
However, he has made the decision to “pursue a different challenge”, as he paid tribute to club and in particular his “great friend” Mikel Arteta.
Edu said: “This was an incredibly hard decision to make.
"Arsenal has given me the opportunity to work with so many amazing people and the chance to be a part of something so special in the club’s history.
“It has been a special journey and I thank Stan, Josh, Tim and Lord Harris for the support they’ve given me. “I’ve loved working with so many great colleagues across our men’s, women’s and academy teams, especially Mikel, who has become a great friend.
“Now it is time to pursue a different challenge. Arsenal will always remain in my heart. I wish the club and its supporters only good things and all the very best.”
Reports suggest that Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis is keen for Edu to oversee his portfolio of clubs, which also includes Olympiakos and Rio Ave.
It is claimed that Edu has agreed to take up that position, and is in line for a major pay-rise should he do so.
Edu oversaw a significant overhaul of Arsenal’s squad in recent years, with the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Nicolas Pepe and Mesut Ozil moved on as the recruitment shifted focus towards younger players.
His departure comes at a difficult time for Arsenal, who are on a bad run and have slipped seven points off the pace in the Premier League title race.
How the Gunners replace Edu remains to be seen, but co-chair Josh Kroenke insisted his departure will not derail the club’s ambitions.
Kroenke said: “We respect Edu’s decision and thank him for his immense contribution and dedication to drive the club forward.
“Everyone at the club wishes him well. We are all so fond of him and the positive energy he brings to everything and everyone.
“Change and evolution is a part of our club. We remain focused on our strategy and winning major trophies. Our succession plan will reflect this continued ambition.”
