Mikel Arteta says Arsenal need to continue adding to their squad this summer, as he dropped a hint over the club’s move for Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres.

Arsenal remain in talks with Sporting over a deal for Gyokeres, who is currently on holiday after refusing to return to pre-season training.

Sporting have been playing hardball over the sale of Gyokeres, but there is optimism a deal can be struck as the Portuguese club are in talks to sign Almeria striker Luis Suarez as his replacement.

Arsenal, who are now in Singapore for their pre-season tour, have signed four players this summer after bringing in Christian Norgaard, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi and Noni Madueke for over £100m.

But Arteta is eager to get more players through the door, with Arsenal close to completing a move for Valencia defender Cristhian Mosquera.

“There’s still a long time in the window and we are seeking still,” said Arteta during a press conference in Singapore on Monday.

“In terms of numbers, we are short and we have to improve the depth and the quality of the squad - and we are constantly looking in the market.

“Until that happens, again, focus on the players that we actually have, work with them, and I’m very pleased with what I have seen so far in the first 10 to 15 days.

“It’s like shaking the tree again - bringing new faces, they bring new excitement, new energy as well.

“We signed very important players as well, and, again, I think everybody feels that the heights have to go to a different level and it’s what we are seeking.”

Arteta refused to comment on a deal for Gyokeres, but did hint that he hopes a move can be sealed eventually.

“You know I cannot comment on any player that is not part of our group yet,” he said. “When we have something concrete to offer in any case to any player, we will do that.”

Arsenal’s new sporting director, Andrea Berta, has led the club’s transfer business this summer and Arteta has been pleased with the work done.

The Gunners managed to get four players signed before they flew out to Singapore for their pre-season tour last Saturday.

“Ideally you want it on day one in pre-season,” said Arteta. “So, I think we have done very, very well so far.

“I’m very pleased with the way the club is supporting the necessities and improvements that we required in the team.

“I think Andrea and the team are doing an excellent job as well, trying to push everything forward. And there is still a long time to go in that window, but we have still a lot of hopes that we can improve the team and we are going to continue to try and do that.

“I’m very pleased, that is what I would say. There is a lot of parties and a lot of things that we have to bear in mind to get a play over the line and here, but I am very hopeful that we are going to do it very soon.”
