Arsenal are considering moving on from Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko after frustration in attempts to sign the forward duo.
Gyokeres and Sesko emerged early in the transfer window as Arsenal’s priorities for their centre-forward search. However, negotiations with Sporting Lisbon and RB Leipzig respectively have failed to find a breakthrough despite both players being keen on the move to North London.
Gyokeres is currently involved in a tense stand-off at Sporting. The Swedish striker believes a gentleman’s agreement to sanction his sale for an initial €60m has been broken by the board.
Sporting president Frederico Varandas has insisted the 27-year-old will not be allowed to leave for €60m plus €10m add-ons, a situation that has led to Gyokeres threatening strike action. He has informed Sporting he has no plans to return for pre-season.
Arsenal’s pursuit of Sesko has also not progressed as hoped. The 22-year-old is a long-term target for the Gunners after a failed approach last summer.
Discussions have been held with Leipzig for the Slovenia striker, who scored 21 goals last season, but no public progress has been made. Leipzig are reportedly demanding a fee of around €80m.
The frustration in those negotiations has led Arsenal to consider moving on to new targets. German outlet BILD are reporting that the North Londoners are prepared to enter the race for Hugo Ekitike.
Chelsea and Liverpool have courted the French forward this summer, who scored 22 goals in all competitions last season and added 12 assists. Frankfurt have set an asking price of €100m (£85m) on the 22-year-old but there is optimism in England that a lower fee can be agreed.
