Arsenal and Liverpool have both made Alexander Isak their first-choice forward target for the summer, despite Newcastle’s valuation of the forward.

Isak is the second-highest scorer in the Premier League this season and has netted 61 times in 106 games since joining Newcastle from Real Sociedad in 2022.

The Magpies spent a club-record £63m to sign Isak and would demand a British transfer record fee to contemplate his sale.

Despite his huge asking price, David Ornstein has revealed that Isak is the number one target for both Arsenal and Liverpool. The two teams want to sign a marquee number nine in the summer and Isak heads the shortlist of both sides.

Newcastle are reluctant to sell their leading scorer but have dealt with Premier League Profit and Sustainability issues in recent windows. The Magpies were forced to cash in on Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh last summer, while head coach Eddie Howe admitted further sales may be required ahead of the January window.

“The days when teams don’t sell big players are gone,” said Howe in December.

“I think our revenue streams aren’t where we want them to be. We’re still trying to grow them, so I think that trading in and out is going to be essential.

“Hopefully it’s not going to be players that we’re forced to sell but you can’t guarantee anything. The issue with PSR and our position is that nothing is clearcut. Nothing is absolutely fixed; there will be lots of twists and turns in January. But we want to try and improve the squad.”

However, Newcastle are third in the Premier League table and on course for Champions League qualification. The lucrative reward of a place in Europe’s elite could strengthen their negotiating position on Isak. The Sweden international is contracted at St James’ Park until 2028.
