Arne Slot watched on as his Liverpool side crashed out of the Champions League to PSG.

A great watch for neutrals, as this second leg went to extra-time and then penalties.

The only mystery wasn’t that PSG won, it was how Liverpool managed to make it that far.

In both legs the French side by far the better team, creating an unreal number of chances across the two matches but somehow only scoring one goal in around four hours of football.

Justice done in the end though, as PSG scored all of their penalties and Liverpool failed with two of theirs.

Arne Slot now left wondering how this Champions League exit will impact on Sunday against Newcastle United at Wembley. Both in terms of picking his players up and indeed which ones may be unavailable after such an epic and draining contest.

Liverpool official media reporting on Arne Slot injury and availability comments ahead of facing Newcastle United, following the defeat to PSG:

Liverpool will need to assess the issues that saw Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ibrahima Konate go off against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night.

Alexander-Arnold went down with an injury during the second half of the Champions League last-16 second leg at Anfield, in which the Reds were beaten 1-0 and eliminated via penalties (1-4).

Head coach Arne Slot expects the No.66 will be unavailable for the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday, but hopes Konate – who limped off late into extra-time versus PSG – may be a case of fatigue.

“I have to ask but for me Ibou was more that he was tired than it was an injury. With Trent, he had to come off. That’s never a good sign,” said Slot at his post-match press conference.

“And from what I heard from people that saw the images or how he got injured, that didn’t look very good. So I would be surprised if he is available for Sunday.”

On any physical ‘cost’ to his team from the night, Slot continued: “The good thing is we play a final on Sunday, so mentally that’s probably the best you can ask for, because this is what we are playing football for: to play finals.

“And then there are two-and-a-half weeks in between before we start the season again.
