The future of Emiliano Martinez has become the subject of great speculation going into the summer transfer window.

This comes after Emiliano Martinez’s emotional reaction during Aston Villa’s last game at Villa Park this season, where he appeared to wave goodbye to the fans.

Uncertainty around Martinez’s future has now put a host of clubs on red alert, with Barcelona emerging as one of the potential suitors.

Barcelona approach Martinez

According to D Sports, Barcelona are among the clubs who have approached Martinez in light of his uncertain future at Villa Park.

It appears the Catalans are open to the prospect of onboarding the Argentine international, who had played a pivotal role in his country’s World Cup triumph in 2022.

Over the past few years, Martinez has established himself as a world-class goalkeeper, with many rating him among the best in the Premier League.

Along with Barcelona, Manchester United, too, have approached Martinez as they look to find an upgrade over Andre Onana.

Barça’s interest in Emiliano Martínez is rather curious, but not surprising. The club, after all, are looking for a new goalkeeper, especially amid uncertainty over Wojciech Szczesny’s future.

The Catalans have offered the Pole a one-year extension, but the goalkeeper has appeared hesitant in continuing his career after coming back from retirement at the end of last year.

Fresh uncertainty surrounding his continuation has forced Barcelona to scour the market for a second-choice goalkeeper.

What is curious about Barcelona’s interest in Martinez, though, is that most would see the Argentine as a first-choice goalkeeping option, as opposed to a backup for Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Therefore, unless Barça plan on selling ter Stegen in the coming summer, it is unlikely the club would have any hope of signing Martinez.
