An up-and-coming member of the defensive ranks at La Liga heavyweights Barcelona has this week been tipped for a call-up to senior duties with Hansi Flick’s squad.

The player in question? Álvaro Cortés.

Cortés, for his part, is a 20-year-old central defender, who has long been hailed for his physical abilities.

The Spaniard spent last season plying his trade with Barca Atlètic, and proved himself one of few shining lights in an otherwise hugely underwhelming campaign.

It is Cortés’ most recent showing, this past weekend, though, which has since given rise to fresh calls for a senior call-up.

After Barcelona’s next crop of young talent made the trip to South America for an U20 Intercontinental Cup meeting with Flamengo, the club’s defensive stalwart enjoyed a starring display.

This included a fine header which, at one point, appeared set to prove enough to guide the Blaugrana to victory.

As confirmed by Diario Sport, Hansi Flick is keeping a close eye on Cortés, following the departure of Iñigo Martínez to Saudi Arabia.

With another hectic season no doubt in store in Catalunya’s capital, the young stopper’s first-team chance could arrive sooner rather than later…
