Tottenham’s Lucas Bergvall is in the spotlight, with doubts emerging about whether he’s ready to handle the challenges of Premier League football.

The Swedish youngster, who joined Spurs in the summer, has shown flashes of potential but has not yet cemented his place in Ange Postecoglou’s plans.

Bergvall’s move from the Allsvenskan to the Premier League was always going to be a huge leap.

Despite an impressive pre-season that got fans excited, the 18-year-old has struggled to replicate that form consistently in competitive matches like the Carabao Cup and Europa League.

Swedish journalist Tobias Hellgren has suggested that Postecoglou’s recent comments reflect a lack of trust in Bergvall at this stage of his development.

Following Tottenham’s 3-2 loss to Galatasaray, Postecoglou noted that Bergvall is still learning and that playing at this level at such a young age isn’t easy.

Hellgren believes this sentiment, combined with the decision to sub Bergvall off after Radu Dragusin’s red card against Qarabag, highlights the Australian manager’s reservations about the player.

Speaking to Fotboll Skanalen, Hellgren remarked:

“Postecoglou keeps returning to the idea that Bergvall has ‘more to learn.’ This subtle message likely means he’s not yet convinced of Bergvall’s ability to handle the high tempo and intensity of the Premier League.”

Hellgren also pointed out that being the first to be subbed off in tricky situations, like against Manchester United and Qarabag, can indicate a player’s lower standing in a manager’s hierarchy.

A loan move could be the answer for Lucas Bergvall

Although it’s too early to discuss a loan move, Hellgren hinted that it might become a topic if Bergvall’s situation doesn’t improve soon.

While staying within Tottenham’s environment offers valuable exposure, the young midfielder needs to seize any opportunities that arise due to injuries or suspensions to climb the pecking order.

Bergvall might not be up to regular Premier League action just yet, but his potential is undeniable.

With plenty of time ahead in the season, the Swedish starlet has the chance to prove himself and push for more opportunities in a team that’s still finding its rhythm under Postecoglou.
